Covishield, Covaxin effective against UK, Brazilian variants; work against the South African tension in: Government | India News

NEW DELHI: The Covishield and Covaxin vaccines are effective against the UK and Brazilian variants of the coronavirus, while work against the South African strain was carried out in multiple laboratories, the Center said Tuesday.
At a weekly Union Health Ministry press conference, ICMR Director General Balram Bhargava also said that of the 11,064 genome samples sequenced in the country, the British variant of the virus was detected in 807, the South African variant. in 47 and the Brazilian variant was found in one.
“Both vaccines, Covishield and Covaxin, are effective against the UK and the Brazilian variants and work against the South African variant is ongoing in various laboratories,” he said.
Bhargava further said that mutations are sporadic and single mutations are not dominant in any particular area of India.
“In terms of the significance of the point of double mutations, they are not significant as far as India is concerned and their relationship to higher severity or higher transmissibility has not been established in the Indian context,” he said.
In response to another question, Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan said that there is no Indian strain of coronavirus.
Noting that there are two concepts: the concept of virus change and virus drift, Bhushan said that all viruses move as the virus replicates itself, but the changes that occur due to this process are not important. and it does not require any rapid change in public response. strategy.
He also said it was “a natural and unavoidable phenomenon” that a virus that has been around for more than a year, traveled through more than a million people, obviously undergoes a change. This is not a cause for panic, he added.
“However, when a virus changes, it undergoes significant changes and it is necessary to test whether my existing vaccines work against the virus, known as a variant or mutant virus,” he explained.
Last week, the Union Ministry of Health said that the new “double mutant” variant of SARS-CoV-2 was detected in Delhi, Maharashtra and some other places, in addition to the three “variants of concern”, which were noted. for the first time in the UK and South Africa. and Brazil, which have been found in at least 18 states and union territories.
