President Kovind Agrees to NCT Bill, Giving More Power to LG in Delhi | India News

NEW DELHI: On Sunday, President Ram Nath Kovind gave his consent to the Delhi National Capital Territory (Amendment) Act 2021, which gives more powers to the Deputy Governor in Delhi.
The law seeks to grant more powers to the lieutenant governor, specifying that any decision of the cabinet or state government would need his “opinion” before its implementation.
The 2021 NCT bill was approved by the Lok Sabha amid strong opposition from Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which said the legislation is “unconstitutional.” Rajya Sabha Vice President Harivansh Narayan Sigh stated that the bill was passed in an oral vote after an opposition strike.
Delhi Prime Minister Arvind Kejriwal called the passage of the bill in Lok Sabha seeking to make clear that the “government” in Delhi means “Lieutenant Governor” as an “insult” to the people of the national capital.
