NIA catches TMC leader Mahato in 12-year case | India News

LALGARH / KOLKATA: The Trinamool Congressional Secretary of State and former Maoist-backed Lalgarh activist Chhatradhar Mahato were arrested by the National Investigative Agency (NIA) early Sunday morning for allegedly causing armed tribes to hold back a train full of passengers and crew of the Rajdhani Express held hostage at Jhargram in West Midnapore of Bengal. 12 years ago.
Mahato’s arrest under the Unlawful Activity (Prevention) Act came three days after the Calcutta High Court cleared him from custody questioning by the NIA in another 2009 case involving the murder of a CPM official in Lalgarh. Mahato’s attorney, Kaushik Sinha, questioned the need for an NIA contingent to raid his client’s home in Lalgarh in the middle of the night.
A day before his arrest, Mahato had said that he was interrogated for six hours in Calcutta on Friday before rushing back to Lalgarh to attend a party meeting. “I will meet with NIA agents (in the murder case) according to court orders,” he said.
While temporarily protecting him from custody questioning, the high court had ordered Mahato to appear before the NIA at its Salt Lake office in Calcutta three times a week and not leave Bengal until the next hearing on April 16.
