NEW DELHI: Maharashtra recorded its highest single-day peak of 40,414 new Covid-19 cases on Sunday, bringing its overall count to 2.71.3875, while 108 deaths brought the figure to 54,181.
As 17,874 patients were discharged during the day, the state’s recovery count rose to 23,32,453, the state health department said. There are 3,25,901 active cases in the state today.
Meanwhile, Mumbai reported 6,923 new cases, its biggest daily increase so far.
Earlier today, Maharashtra’s Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray called on senior health officials to prepare for “lockdown-like” restrictions if people continue to disobey Covid rules in the state.
Thackeray asked officials to prepare a plan for the implementation of a lockdown that will have minimal impact on the economy on the recommendation of the state Covid-19 task force, according to an official statement.
With the increase in Covid-19 cases in the state, the Maharashtra government ordered a nightly “curfew” across the state starting on March 28. The state government has banned gatherings of more than five people in public places from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. across the state and put places like gardens, beaches and boardwalks off-limits to the public between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m.
All movie theaters, shopping centers, restaurants and auditoriums will also be closed from 8:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.
Maharashtra on Saturday saw a slight drop in daily Covid-19 cases and a marginal increase in Covid-19 deaths. Maharashtra recorded 35,726 new Covid-19 cases and 166 deaths on Saturday.
