SC orders Punjab government to hand over custody of Mukhtar Ansari to UP police | India News

NEW DELHI: The High Court on Friday ordered the Punjab government to hand over custody of the gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari, who is housed in the Rupnagar jail there, to the Uttar Pradesh police.
A court of judges Ashok Bhushan and RS Reddy said custody will be handed over to the state of Uttar Pradesh within two weeks.
The high court issued the verdict on the statement by the Uttar Pradesh government seeking instructions for the Punjab government and the Rupnagar Jail Authority to immediately hand over custody of Ansari to the Banda District Jail.
On March 4, the government of Punjab told the high court that the government led by Yogi Adityanath has no fundamental right to request the transfer of Ansari from Rupnagar prison to a district prison in Banda in Uttar Pradesh.
Ansari has been housed at Rupnagar District Jail in Punjab in connection with an alleged extortion case since January 2019.
He is also charged in several heinous crimes cases brought in Uttar Pradesh.
