Akhil Gogoi Alleges Torture in Custody, claims NIA offered bail if he joined RSS, BJP | India News

GUWAHATI: Anti-CAA activist Akhil Gogoi in a letter from jail on Tuesday alleged physical and mental torture in custody and claimed that NIA interrogators offered him bail if he joined the RSS or the BJP.
The letter published by Gogoi’s recently floating political team, Raijor Dal, said that the peasant leader was brought to Delhi on December 18, 2019 without the permission of the Court.
“At NIA headquarters, they put me in cell # 1 and only gave me a dirty blanket. I slept on the floor at a temperature of 3 to 4 degrees Celsius,” he said.
During questioning, NIA officials offered him immediate bail if he joined the RSS, the letter stated.
“When I was arguing against the insulting offer, they came up with another proposal to join the BJP. They said that I could contest the assembly against a vacant position and become a minister,” Gogoi said.
The RTI activist also alleged that he was offered 20 million rupees to start an NGO by leaving the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) peasant organization and working against the conversion of the Assamese to Christianity.
“When I did not accept any of their proposals, they offered me a meeting with the prime minister and an influential minister from Assam. I also rejected that,” Gogoi said.
He alleged that when he did not accept any of the NIA’s offers, he was branded a “disobedient citizen”, accused in extreme cases.
“They threatened me with dire consequences if I did not accept their proposals. Death threats also came. They threatened me with at least 10 years in prison. With so much physical and mental torture, I became uneasy on the night of December 20.” Ggogi wrote.
He was admitted to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital to treat Covid-19 and remains there for other ailments.
The NIA arrested him in December 2019 for his alleged role in the violent protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act.
