Defense Minister Rajnath Singh Praises DRDO for Developing Air-Independent Propulsion System | India News
The plant was operated in endurance mode and maximum power mode as per user requirements on March 9.
The system is being developed by DRDO’s Naval Materials Research Laboratory (NMRL) located in Maharashtra.
“AIP has a force multiplying effect on the lethality of a diesel-electric submarine as it improves the submerged resistance of the ship, several folds. Fuel cell-based AIP has merits in performance compared to other technologies, ”defense officials explained.
While different types of AIP systems are being applied internationally, NMRL’s fuel cell-based AIP is unique in that hydrogen is generated on board.
“The technology has been successfully developed with the support of industry partners L&T and Thermax. It has now reached the maturity stage for installation on target vessels, ”defense officials said.
Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, the Indian Navy and industry on the achievement.
The DDR & D Secretary and DRDO President, Dr. G Satheesh Reddy thanked the efforts of the teams involved in the successful development.
He called on the DRDO fraternity to present more advanced technological achievements through extraordinary efforts.
