Experts from Mexico recommend approving Indian vaccine | India News

MEXICO CITY: A technical committee of experts in Mexico issued a unanimous favorable opinion on Friday on the approval of the Covaxin vaccine manufactured by Indian pharmaceutical company Bharat Biotech.
The report of the new molecules committee will be sent to the approval board of the federal medical safety commission, which generally follows these recommendations.
Interim results from the vaccine manufacturer’s late-stage trials show that its Covid-19 vaccine is approximately 81% effective in preventing coronavirus disease.
The Bharat Biotech vaccine was controversially approved by India in January without waiting for trials to confirm that the vaccine was effective. Since then 1.3 million doses have been administered in India.
Health workers have been reluctant to take the injections and health experts are concerned that the regulatory shortcut has amplified doubts about vaccines. Bharat Biotech has already signed an agreement with Brazil to supply 20 million doses of the vaccine by September.
It will be the sixth vaccine approved for use in Mexico, which has received relatively small amounts of each. Mexico has administered only about 2.7 million doses of all vaccines, a small number given the country’s population of 126 million.
Mexico reported 712 more confirmed deaths on Friday, bringing the total to nearly 190,000. Yet Mexico conducts so little testing that the government’s excess death figures suggest the true figure was well above 220,000 as of early January, the latest date for which those figures are available. There were nearly 6,800 more confirmed cases on Friday, bringing the total to more than 2.1 million.
