Indore ranks first in more than one million municipalities in India; NDMC Leads Among Small Civic Organizations | India News

NEW DELHI: Indore, India’s cleanest city, has also emerged as the best performing municipality among all the more than one million municipalities in the Center’s first ranking of its kind. The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has been ranked the best among municipalities with less than one million inhabitants.
On Thursday, the Union’s Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs published the Municipal Performance Index report that ranks 114 civic organizations. The classification has been made based on the parameters of service provision, planning, financial systems and governance practices.

According to the report, in addition to Indore, the other nine top performing municipalities with more than one million inhabitants are Surat, Bhopal, Pimpri Chinchwad, Pune, Ahmedabad, Raipur, Greater Mumbai, Visakhapatnam and Vadodara.

The municipal corporations of South Delhi, East Delhi and North Delhi have been ranked 28th, 42nd and 48th, respectively, among the 51 large civic bodies evaluated. But the municipal corporations of Ghaziabad, Meerut and Faridabad fared better at 20th, 29th and 40th respectively.

Among the small municipal agencies, in addition to NDMC, the other 9 best performers are Tirupati, Gandhinagar, Karnal, Salem, Tiruppur, Bilaspur, Udaipur, Jhansi and Tirunelveli.
“While the Ease of Living Index measures a result of the indicator, the Municipal Performance Index focuses on the factors that produce those results,” the ministry said. He added that the Municipal Performance Index is an effort to evaluate and analyze the performance of municipalities based on their defined set of functions.
