NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday gratitude to the countries that joined India in the UN General Assembly, as the organization adopted by consensus a resolution declaring 2023 the International Year of Millet.
The resolution was initiated by India with Bangladesh, Kenya, Nepal, Nigeria, Russia and Senegal and was co-sponsored by more than 70 countries.
It aims to raise awareness of the health benefits of grain and its suitability for cultivation in changing weather conditions. “India is honored to be at the forefront of popularizing Millets, the consumption of which promotes nutrition, food safety and well-being for farmers. This also offers research and innovation opportunities for agricultural scientists and start-up communities. Modi tweeted.
“Thank you to all the nations that initiated and co-sponsored the resolution on the International Year of Millet at @UN. Distinguished delegates were also served a delicious Millet Murukku! This is a snack that I also enjoy and urge everyone to please. try it too., “he said.

While millet cultivation has historically been widespread, its production is declining in many countries. There is an urgent need to promote the nutritional and ecological benefit of millet to consumers, producers and decision makers, to improve production efficiency, investments in research and development and links with the food sector, said the Permanent Representative of India to the UN, Ambassador TS Tirumurti.
