Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Released After 19 Months of House Arrest | India News


SRINAGAR: Ahead of the auspicious Islamic occasion of Mehraj-e-Alam, which falls on March 11, the moderate chairman of the Hurriyat All-Party Conference (APHC) Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was released from home detention on Wednesday after 19 months. He had been under house arrest since August 2019 when the Center removed J & K’s special status and divided the former state into two Union territories of J&K and Ladakh.
According to officials, Mirwaiz was allowed to leave his home in Nigeen in the Hazratbal area of ​​Srinagar starting Tuesday. “I am happy to know that I am now a free man,” Mirwaiz told TOI on Wednesday.
A Hurriyat spokesman, however, said the decision to release has not been officially communicated to Mirwaiz until now.
Mirwaiz said: “I will now launch a campaign against drug addiction, which has begun to eat away at our society, particularly our youth.”
He said he will ensure that there are no public order problems in the Jamia Masjid village in the Nowhatta area of ​​the city.
Meanwhile, PPD Chairman Mehbooba Mufti welcomed Mirwaiz’s release from “arbitrary detention”. She called it good news for the political, social and religious well-being of the J&K people.
Mehbooba tweeted: “Good to hear about Mirwaiz’s release from arbitrary detention. I hope that hundreds of Kashmiri men languishing in prisons inside and outside of J&K will also be released soon. It is time for them to go home to their families ”.
Several mainstream politicians, including former Chief Ministers Farooq Abdullah, Omar Abdullah, and Mehbooba herself, who were also arrested after the Center’s move in August 2019 and against whom the strict Public Safety Act (PSA) was imposed. ), were released in a staggered manner previously. .
