NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 2,085 seats on Tuesday and went ahead of Congress, which has so far won 602 seats in various municipalities, districts and taluka panchayats in Gujarat.
The results for 2,771 seats out of the total 8,474 were declared up to 1:00 p.m. The vote counting has been underway from 9 am in 81 municipalities, 31 district panchayats and 231 taluka panchayats where elections were held on Sunday.
According to the State Elections Commission (SEC), the total of seats in the three local organisms is 8,474 and the candidates in 237 seats remain unopposed.
Farewell elections were also held for two seats in the taluka panchayats and 24 seats in the municipalities.
The new Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has won 15 seats, the Bahujan Samaj Party-5, while the independents have won 42 seats, he said.
In the municipalities, the BJP has so far obtained 803 seats and the Congress, 159.
In the district panchayats, the BJP has so far won 246 seats and the Congress 55.
In taluka panchayats, the BJP has so far emerged victorious with 1,036 seats and Congress with 388 seats.
More than 58,000 security and voting staff are involved in the count taking place at 542 centers in Gujarat, the SEC said.
