Farmers’ Upheaval: Fadnavis Raises Celebrity Tweets Issue, Deshmukh Strikes Back | India News

MUMBAI: BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday trained weapons in the Maharashtra government, suggesting that he was trying to investigate icons such as Sachin Tendulkar and Lata Mangeshkar for their pro-India tweets issued after some foreign celebrities spoke out about the farmers protest near Delhi.
Maharashtra Interior Minister Anil Deshmukh was quick to refute the charge in the State Assembly, saying the state government ordered an investigation of the tweets by the BJP’s IT cell and not by the cricketer Tendulkar and the legendary singer Mangeshkar.
On February 8, Deshmukh said that the state intelligence department will carry out an investigation into allegations that some celebrities were recently pressured to post tweets in connection with the ongoing farmers’ protest.
Deshmukh had made the remarks on an online platform after Congress, a partner in the ruling coalition in Maharashtra, sought an investigation into the BJP’s alleged connection to the tweets of some celebrities and whether the saffron party “twisted their arms. “.
Several prominent personalities, including Tendulkar and Mangeshkar, had rallied around the central government on social media using the hashtags #IndiaTogether and #IndiaAgainstPropaganda.
This came after tweets from American pop star Rihanna and climate activist Greta Thunberg backing farmers protesting near Delhi border points against three farm laws enacted by the Center in September last year.
Fadnavis told the Maharashtra Assembly on Tuesday that Tendulkar and Mangeshkar tweeted that “India is against propaganda” and “India is united.”
“Is it wrong to say in this country that ‘India is united’? Someone stands up, complains to the interior minister,” said the opposition leader in the Assembly and asked Deshmukh to think it over before receiving such complaints. .
Deshmukh, however, dismissed Fadnavis’ charges.
“I did not speak of probing Tendulkar or Mangeshkar. I had spoken of probing the TI cell of a political party, which I am not naming,” the minister said.
“It was investigated. The names of 12 people have come to the fore in this regard and new measures are being taken against them,” he added.
Deshmukh later said in the House that the TI cell in question is from the BJP.
Against him, Fadnavis said he will be proud if he asks someone to tweet around the country.
“Suppose for a minute that I asked them to (tweet). What offense did I commit? What offense did I commit if I asked celebrities to side with the country if there is propaganda against them?” asked the BJP leader
