NEW DELHI: With the administration of the Covid vaccine open to over 60s starting Monday, the Supreme Court has begun the process to vaccinate its 30 justices, including CJI SA Bobde, against the coronavirus.
Of the 30 judges in the SC currently, only Judge Surya Kant does not qualify to be vaccinated against the coronavirus as he is 59 years old. The SC registry has started the process to seek the convenience and choice of the judges on the place of vaccination.
Vaccination will be done at a designated government medical facility, RML Hospital, or medical facility within SC. “If the judges wanted to be vaccinated in the medical center of the Supreme Court, then they would have been observed for 30 minutes to measure the reaction of the drug administered in the recipient,” SC sources said on Monday.
Up to six judges and nearly 600 SC staff members had contracted the infection during the pandemic, causing physical hearings to close. Since March 24 of last year, the SC has been hearing cases only via videoconference.
However, two weeks ago, a judging committee consisting of judges NV Ramana, RF Nariman, UU Lalit, AM Khanwilkar, DY Chandrachud, Ashok Bhushan and LN Rao suggested the beginning of the hybrid hearing, which is a judicious combination of hearing virtual and physical, which has been vigorously demanded by lead attorney Vikas Singh, who has now been elected president of the SC Bar Association.
Upon receiving the report, which asked the registry to formulate the standard operating procedure to start the physical hearing three days a week, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, and continue with the virtual hearing of cases on Mondays and Fridays, CJI SA Bobde has said it could Begin after following the advice of medical experts. SC sources say the hybrid hearing model could start in a week or two.
SC sources said that it will be better to vaccinate all judges against the coronavirus before the start of the physical hearing.
