On February 14, the Pakistan-based terror group Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) attacked a CRPF convoy on the Jammu-Srinagar highway near Pulwama in southern Kashmir and killed 40 CPRF personnel.
Days later, the IAF launched an airstrike on a JeM camp in Balakot, in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
The airstrike was launched in the early hours of February 26 and Pakistani efforts to launch an offensive the next day to attack Indian military installations in Jammu and Kashmir were thwarted by an IAF alert.
In the dogfight, wing commander Abhinandan Varthaman, piloting a MiG-21 Bison fighter jet and chasing Pakistani jets, crossed into PoK where his plane was shot down. Pakistan stopped him. India also shot down a Pakistani warplane.
