BJP sweeps Guj’s civic polls, AAP makes spectacular debut | India News

AHMEDABAD: The BJP swept all six of Gujarat’s municipal corporations, posting its best performance in two decades, winning 483 out of 576 seats and leaving the main opposition Congress in tatters.
The AAP made an impressive debut in the state by winning 27 of the 120 total seats in Surat, practically crushing Congress and emerging as the main opposition party.
In Ahmedabad, another rookie, Asaduddin Owaisi’s All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen, made a memorable pitch at the expense of Congress, winning seven seats in minority-dominated areas that were strongholds of the latter.
AAP won in the Pateld-dominated areas in Surat, which means the entry into Congress of Patidar’s quota leader Hardik Patel has had little impact on the fortunes of the big game. Of the 27 seats the AAP won in Surat, 25 were held by Congress. Everything is set to position itself as a formidable opposition party in Gujarat at a time when a weakened Congress is rapidly losing both its leaders and its base of support.
The BJP’s stupendous victory has ensured that four cities – Rajkot, Vadodara, Jamnagar and Bhavnagar – are unopposed, as none of the rivals have won 10% of the total seats needed to qualify for opposition status. Of the two remaining corporations, Surat will have AAP as the opposition and Ahmedabad will have Congress. The most decisive victory for BJP was in CM Vijay Rupani’s hometown of Rajkot, where he won 68 of the 72 total seats. In 2015, BJP had managed to win just 38.
The BJP won 84% of the total seats in these elections compared to the previous municipal elections held in 2015 when it took 68% of the seats.
The landslide is significant as Congress was relying on job losses and general business pessimism after the shutdown, in addition to the recent increase in fuel prices. The defeat sparked a flurry of resignations by congressional leaders in all six cities, as angry workers vandalized his office in Surat.
