‘Lathis, water cannons won’t scare farmers’ | India News

NEW DELHI: The budget debate in Rajya Sabha on Thursday saw MPs raising concerns about farm laws with Shiromani Akali Dal member Naresh Gujral launching an attack on the government and making clear that “lathis, wires of Spikes and water cannons Don’t scare the protesting farmers sitting on the borders of Delhi.
He said that farmers would only go home when they could say “Fateh, Fateh, Fateh” (victory). He demanded that agricultural laws be repealed and that the MSP be guaranteed to farmers through a law for all agricultural products. Akali Dal, a longtime BJP ally, had resigned from the NDA over controversial farm laws.
Gujral said that BJP spokesmen should not attribute labels such as “anti-national” and “khalistani” to protesting farmers. He noted that while the defense budget had been increased and was an important step, motivating soldiers was essential and the government must remember that many farming families send their children to the defense forces. The Akali leader said that the farmers were on the streets because they feel the market is going to be taken away.
