Temple for MGR and J Jayalalithaa opens in Tamil Nadu | India News

MADURAI: A temple dedicated to AIADMK icons MG Ramachandran and J Jayalalithaa, it was introduced near here on Saturday by Chief Minister K Palaniswami and Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam. In a grand function, Palaniswami and Panneerselvam, the top AIADMK leaders who performed an ‘arti’, opened the temple, a large multi-pillar hall with life-size bronze statues of MGR and Jayalalithaa.
Amid hymn chants, the priests poured holy water at the top – which bore similarities to a pot – on the dome-shaped structure above the roof.
The shrine, an initiative of the Minister of Finance, RB Udhayakumar, who is also the secretary to ‘Amma Peravai’ of the AIADMK wing, is located on a 12-acre site at T Kunnathur in the Madurai district.
The Jayalalithaa and MGR statues feature statues of a lion and the shrine was opened to the public.
A large number of party workers gathered for the event and in their speech, Palaniswami and Panneerselvam greeted the two deceased leaders and recalled the welfare measures initiated during their tenures.
Palaniswami called on the cadres to work with cohesion and win the elections to the Assembly, scheduled in a few months, for the continuation of the government of ‘Amma’.
He recalled the unveiling of a phoneix-themed monument (on the site of the Jayalalithaa mausoleum) on Chennai’s Marina Beach and declared his residence in the state capital as a monument.
Panneerselvam, recalling that the head of DMK, MK Stalin, had recently held a spear as Lord Muruga’s weapon in his hand, said that such tactics would not help him seize power in Tamil Nadu.
During the run-up to the elections, ‘some’ practiced deception to deceive the people that they worshiped divinity, the Senior Deputy Minister said, adding that only AIADMK had the blessings of both the people and the Almighty.
