Soldier killed, 3 wounded in J&K grenade attack | India News


SRINAGAR: A soldier was killed and three of his colleagues were injured in an explosion set off by suspected terrorists in the Kulgam district of southern Kashmir on Wednesday morning. The victim, Havildar Deepak Kumar, was part of a highway opening group deployed by the Army’s 24 Rashtriya rifles along the Shamsipora stretch of the Srinagar-Jammu highway.
A defense spokesman said the team was conducting a disinfection exercise in the area when the blast occurred, unleashing a shower of splinters that hit four soldiers in the vicinity. The four were rushed to Hospital Base 92 of the Army in SrinagarIt is Badamibagh, where Havildar Deepak succumbed to his injuries.
IGP (Kashmir range) Vijay Kumar said in Srinagar that terrorists detonated an improvised explosive device (IED) placed in an abandoned building within the campus of a government high school in Subhanpora known to frequent the Rashtriya Rifles unit. Initially, the Army had described it as a grenade attack.
Reinforcements arrived in the area shortly thereafter for a cordon and search operation that went on until late at night.
IGP Vijay Kumar said the Qaimoh police station was the first to receive information about an explosion at the school. A preliminary investigation suggested that the explosion was caused by “a rudimentary improvised explosive device” with ball bearings hidden in a mixture of low-intensity explosives.
“The attack appears to have been planned after observing the movement of troops for a long time. The IED could have been placed the night before, ”said the IGP.
