NEW DELHI: A protesting farmer was killed after his tractor overturned at the ITO in central Delhi during the farmers’ tractor parade on Tuesday, police said.
They said details about the deceased have not yet been compiled.
The man was killed when his tractor overturned at ITO, where many farmers participating in the parade had arrived from the Ghazipur border after taking a detour from the previously agreed route for the march, a senior police official said.
Police said the man was driving the tractor and got under the vehicle when it rolled over.
The farmers covered the body with the tricolor and stored it at the ITO crossing, without allowing the police to send it for autopsy.
Farmers also lashed out at the media covering the incident.
Protesting farmers clashed with police at various locations in the national capital and entered the iconic Red Fort and ITO in the heart of the city on Tuesday after hundreds of them deviated from predetermined routes, leading to the security personnel to resort to dairy loads and tear gas.
Chaotic scenes were witnessed at ITO, where hundreds of protesters could be seen chasing police personnel with sticks and ramming their tractors into buses parked by the police.
