DRDO successfully tests fires Akash surface-to-air missiles | India News

NEW DELHI: In a major milestone in the ongoing surface-to-air missile (SAM) program, India successfully conducted the first test of ‘Akash-Next Generation’ (Akash-NG) from a defense facility off the Odisha coast on Monday. The missile was launched from the integrated test range.
Akash-NG is a new generation surface-to-air missile designed to be used by the IAF for the purpose of intercepting high-maneuver aerial threats.
In a statement, the DRDO said the missile intercepted the target with textbook precision and that the launch met all test objectives by performing large maneuvers during trajectory.
“The performance of the command and control system, the avionics on board and the aerodynamic configuration of the missile was successfully validated,” the statement said.
The successful inaugural ground-to-air Akash-NG test took on significance as it came a few days after the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Modi gave its go-ahead to the export of Akash missile systems to “friendly” countries. .
The Akash weapon system has been designed and developed by DRDO (Defense Research and Development Organization) with 96% indigenous content.
