The long list of recommended personnel for gallantry awards on this Republic Day included Colonel Santosh Babu, commander-in-chief of 16 Bihar, who lost his life in the confrontation. The highest gallantry awards in peacetime include Ashok Chakra, Kirti Chakra, and Shaurya Chakra.
The clash in the Galwan Valley took place on June 15 last year when Indian troops led by Colonel Babu clashed with Chinese troops near patrol area 14.
