RAJKOT: Gir Somnath district officials confirmed Saturday the first case of bird flu in the region in poultry.
About 220 poultry were slaughtered in one day while restraining orders were issued throughout the district regarding the consumption and sale of eggs and chicken.
More than a dozen poultry were found dead in the Kodinar taluka village of Dolasa a few days ago. The carcasses were sent for forensic testing and the Friday night report confirmed avian influenza.
A team from the department of animal husbandry surveyed the area and slaughter orders were given to four poultry farms within a 1 km radius of the affected farm. The district administration said the entire area has been disinfected and an area of 10 km radius has been declared a surveillance zone for the next 60 days.
