1 lakh of paramilitary troops probably for Bengal elections | India News


NEW DELHI: Up to one lakh of central paramilitary personnel can be deployed to West Bengal for the upcoming assembly elections, surpassing the nearly 75,000-80,000 employees who stood guard during the state’s 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
Although the Electoral Commission and the Ministry of the Interior have yet to find a balance between the central forces required by the EC and availability as assessed by the ministry, officials did not rule out the deployment of at least 1,000 companies of the armed police forces. Centrals (CAPF) given the concerns about law and order, as well as apprehensions of political violence among the majority of the opposition parties in West Bengal.
Assembly elections in West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry will be held in April.
TOI learned that there are also some security-related concerns in Assam, where protests against the CAA have revived, and Kerala, which is no stranger to violent clashes.
