MUMBAI: A brave 6-year-old girl who was kidnapped, beaten, raped and left on the road with serious injuries that took her to hospital for about four months, returned to court to depose and identify the defendant, a 35- Rickshaw driver one year automatic. The statement helped convict and sentence the man to life in prison on Thursday. The special court of the Law on Protection of Children against Sexual Offenses also fined the defendant, Shivkumar Rana, totaling Rs 50,000.
“Out of the fine, Rs 40,000 will be awarded to the victim as compensation after the appeal period is over. The court recommends the payment of compensation to the victim under the Victim Compensation Plan. The copy of the judgment be sent to the District Legal Assistance Authority, Mumbai, ”the court said.
Special prosecutor Geeta Sharma relied on the statements of the minor, her parents, the police, the doctors and a CCTV camera technician. The child’s detailed description of the defendant after the 2015 incident helped the police prepare their sketch. She had described him as “tall, slim and dark, dressed in khaki clothes, a string at the wrist and black chappals, he speaks Hindi and chews paan.”
During the investigation, images from a closed-circuit television camera of a traffic light near the place where the incident occurred, showed the boy in the defendant’s vehicle. Police tracked down the vehicle and caught the defendant on March 10, 2015.
The minor told the court that on the night of the incident on March 1, 2015, as she was on her way home after buying milk, the defendant detained her. He told her that he was a friend of her father and that he would leave her at home. The girl said that despite her refusal, he forced her to sit with him in the front seat. She said that after arriving in the “jungle,” the defendant stopped and sexually assaulted her in the vehicle. She said he then pushed her onto the road and told her that her father would pick her up.
