PM Modi to give away plots to 1 lakh of ‘indigenous’ people in Assam | India News

GUWAHATI: Initiating Assam’s largest land donation since Independence, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will formally hand over ownership of up to seven bighas of farmland each and smaller parcels for farms to more than one lakh of indigenous “landless people “in the historic city of Sivasagar on Saturday.
Prime Minister Modi’s first visit to the state in nearly a year will be both to set the tone for the BJP’s re-election campaign and to reflect on the party’s 2016 election-winning promise to protect “jati, mati and bheti (identity , land and country) ”.
Each rural beneficiary will receive 1.08 lakh square feet of land for agriculture (one Bigha from Assam equals 14,400 square feet) and another parcel from a Bigha to build a house. Those living in cities will get a plot of 1.1 cottah each (a cottah is 2,880 square feet), while a Guwahati-based beneficiary will be entitled to 1.5 cottah, which is the minimum land size stipulated for a house approved by the municipality.
“The people of Assam will always be grateful to PM Modi and will welcome him to this historic event. The distribution of land will induce confidence among indigenous people that the government is committed to protecting their ‘jati, mati and bheti’ at a time when there is a threat to the territorial rights of the natives from illegal immigrants ”, CM Sarbananda Sonowal said. .
He said: “In order to reverse the trend of ‘uncontrolled migration’, it became imperative for the current government to guarantee land concessions to landless indigenous families.”
