NEW DELHI: On Friday, CBI booked British consultancy Cambridge Analytica and Global Science Research for illegally collecting data from Facebook users.
The action came after a preliminary investigation into the matter which showed that Global Science Research had created an app “thisisyourdigitallife” that was licensed by Facebook to collect specific data sets from its users for research and academic purposes in 2014.
The company then entered into a criminal conspiracy with Cambridge Analytica, allowing it to use the collected data for commercial purposes, officials said.
Facebook had collected certificates from both companies in 2016-17 that the data collected by them using “thisisyourdigitallife” was posted and destroyed. However, the CBI investigation did not find any evidence of such destruction, according to officials.
“The prima facie investigation established that Global Science Research Ltd, UK dishonestly and fraudulently accessed the data of ‘thisisyourdigitallife’ app users and their Facebook friends,” an official said, citing the FIR.
The government had ordered an IWC investigation into the matter after the US-based social media giant Facebook admitted in April 2018 that nearly 5.62 lakh people in India were “potentially affected” by the global data breach by CA and claimed that the use of such data did not have its consent.
Following the government order, the CBI began examining the data breach after receiving a referral from the ministry of information and technology.
