JAMMU: A soldier was killed on Thursday when Pakistan resorted to heavy cross-border bombardment during the ongoing ceasefire violation along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir.
Havildar Nirmal Singh of the Jammu & Kashmir Rifles infantry regiment was seriously wounded in the gunfire and later succumbed to his wounds, becoming the second Indian victim of cross-border shooting throughout the LoC since 1 January.
“The nation will always be indebted to him for his supreme sacrifice and devotion to duty,” said Udhampur-based defense spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Abhinav Navneet. On January 1, a Naib Subedar was killed when Pakistani troops violated the ceasefire twice throughout the LoC in the Nowshera sector of the Rajouri district. The highest number of violations of the ceasefire by Pakistan was recorded in 2020 (more than 5,000 incidents). By comparison, there were only 3,289 violations of the ceasefire by Pakistan in 2019.
