NEW DELHI: A day after reports emerged of the destruction of a Hindu temple in Pakistan, India on Friday filed a formal protest with Pakistan through diplomatic channels, according to sources.
On Wednesday, a mob set fire to a temple and then demolished it in Karak, a city in the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Following the demolition, police arrested 31 people in night raids as dozens of Hindus marched across the country to again protest the violence at their place of worship.
The attack occurred after members of the Hindu community received permission from local authorities to renovate the temple. According to police and witnesses, the mob was led by radical cleric Maulana Shareef and supporters of Pakistan’s radical Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam party.
