Drass freezes at minus 26.8 degrees Celsius, Gulmarg at minus 9 degrees Celsius | India News


SRINAGAR: Extreme cold snap conditions continue in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh on Friday, as minimum temperatures fell well below freezing throughout Kashmir and Ladakh.
“We are expecting light to moderate snowfall between January 4-5. Until then, the current cold snap is likely to continue unabated,” said a MeT department official.
The 40-day period of intense winter cold known locally as the ‘Chillai Kalan’ will end on January 31.
Srinagar was minus 6.4 degrees Celsius, Pahalgam minus 7.8 degrees Celsius and Gulmarg minus 9 degrees Celsius as the day’s low temperatures.
The city of Ladakh in Leh was minus 17 degrees Celsius, Kargil minus 17.4 and Drass minus 26.8 as the lowest night temperatures.
The city of Jammu had 4.2, Katra 5.2, Batote 0.9, Banihal 1.0 and Bhaderwah minus 1.8 as minimum temperatures.
Due to extremely slippery road conditions, authorities announced on Friday that the Srinagar-Leh highway will remain closed until further orders are issued.
