Lok Sabha Speaker Calls For High-Level Investigation Into Death Of Deputy Chairman Of Karnataka Legislative Council | India News

NEW DELHI: Lok Sabha Chairman Om Birla on Wednesday called for a high-level investigation by an independent agency into the death of Karnataka Legislative Council Vice Chairman SL Dharme Gowda.
Gowda, 64, was found dead on the train tracks in the Chikkamagaluru district of Karnataka in the early hours of Tuesday morning, and police sources claimed it was a suicide case. It was a JD (S) MLC.
He was at the center of a major drama on December 15 at the legislative council, which saw BJP, JD (S), and members of Congress launching abuse and pushing each other in a no-confidence motion against President K Pratapachandra Shetty.
During the uproar, Gowda was removed from the presidency by some congressional legislators, who accused him of holding him as vice president against the rules, as part of the BJP’s plan to remove Shetty, who is from Congress.
Referring to the incident, Birla said: “The unfortunate incident in the House, when he was in the presidency, is a serious attack on democracy. It is necessary to have a high-level investigation through an independent agency into his death.”
According to an official statement, the president of the Lok Sabha said: “It is everyone’s duty to safeguard the prestige of the legislative bodies and the dignity and freedom of the presidents.”
