TMC leader shot dead in Bengal’s Howrah district, mob loots buses and shops
A youth leader of the Howrah district Trinamool Congress was shot by motorcycle assailants in the Shalimar area Tuesday afternoon, police said.
Dharmendra Singh was traveling as a passenger on the motorcycle of a party worker at around 4 pm when the hitmen blocked their way and opened fire in front of eyewitnesses. Singh was rushed to a private hospital, but succumbed to gunshot wounds.
Singh was associated with the real estate business, local TMC workers told police. “There is an investigation underway. No arrests were made until 9 pm, ”an official from the local police station said on condition of anonymity.
TMC workers wreaked havoc after the incident, looting four buses and several stores. They also set fire to some two-wheelers. The Rapid Action Force had to be deployed to disperse the mob.
Unidentified men also broke into the residence of a local young woman, Vicky Singh, around 6.30 pm and looted her before setting the furniture on fire. Sigh and his wife, who had moved into the apartment about six months ago, were not present when the incident occurred. The apartment was locked from the outside. Two firefighters controlled the fire.
Arup Roy, the local TMC legislator and minister, alleged that the murder was possibly carried out by hitmen sent by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), but did not file any specific complaint.
Surajit Saha, chairman of the BJP’s Howrah Municipal Unit, dismissed the accusation, saying the murder was the result of rivalry between two TMC groups. It also alleged that the deceased had faced criminal charges in the past.
