3 with UK variant in Karnataka; 3 more in Hyderabad, Pune | India News


BENGALURU: At least six of the more than 100 returnees from the UK who have tested positive for Covid-19 so far have been found to be infected with the new UK variant, three of them in Karnataka.
According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoH & FW), some 33,000 people disembarked at various Indian airports from the UK between November 25 and December 23. “So far, only 114 have tested positive and all of their samples have been sent to the 10 designated laboratories of India’s SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) for sequencing,” the ministry said.
He added that, as of Tuesday (December 29) morning, six samples, three sequenced at NIMHANS, Bengaluru, two at CCMB, Hyderabad and one at NIV, Pune, have the new UK variant. All of these individuals have been kept in single room isolation in health care facilities designated by the respective state governments.
Karnataka Health Minister K Sudhakar said: “Designated labs send results of genomes being sequenced directly to ICMR, which released initial details this morning. We have also learned it only today and until now, we know that of the three in our state, there are two, a mother and a daughter, from the same family ”.
He added that all returnees who have tested positive so far, even if evidence that they are infected with the new variant is awaited, are being isolated and treated. “We have even traced their primary and secondary contacts,” Sudhakar said.
Apart from these three labs, NIBMG, Kolkata, ILS, Bhubaneswar, CCS, Pune, CDFD Hyderabad, InSTEM, Bengaluru, IGIB, Delhi, and NCDC, Delhi, are sequencing genomes.
“The situation is under careful surveillance and regular advice is being provided to states to improve surveillance, containment, testing and shipment of samples to INSACOG laboratories. It is important to note that Denmark, the Netherlands, Australia, Italy, Sweden, France, Spain, Switzerland, Germany, Canada, Japan, Lebanon and Denmark have already reported the presence of the new UK variant.
