A 20-year-old bear and her 5-year-old cub were killed after being struck by a vehicle early this morning in the Sambalpur district.

Wildlife officials said the mother bear and her cub were crossing the Podabalanda-Badmal road below the Rairakhol forest division early Saturday when an unknown vehicle struck them and killed both animals.

Wildlife officials arrived at the scene upon receiving information and sent the bodies for an autopsy. They have also started an investigation.

The accidental death of the bears came five days after an elephant was run over by the Puri-Surat Express train near Bhabanipali between Hatibari and Maneswar train stations under the Sambalpur division.

In another incident, a 13-year-old boy was trampled by an elephant, while another teenager was injured in the attack.
