The investigation into the jail event glorifying Asaram to be completed in 2-3 days – official
The investigation into allegations that followers of the self-described god Asaram, who is serving a sentence for rape, visited the district jail here and distributed blankets will be completed in two to three days, said Deputy Inspector General (prisons) RN Pandey.
Pandey visited the Shahjahanpur District Jail in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday and investigated the matter in detail for more than seven hours, as well as recording statements from jail officials.
“Statements from the superintendent of the prison, Rakesh Kumar, the jailer Rajesh Kumar and others were recorded. Documentary evidence such as books and brochures distributed by Asaram supporters were also collected, ”said Pandey on Friday.
The jail doorman, the warden and some inmates were also questioned, he said, adding that he will complete the investigation in two or three days and deliver the report to the Director General (Prisons).
The two followers of Asaram had reportedly come from Lucknow, distributed blankets and held a prayer meeting in which Asaram’s photograph was posted on Monday.
The investigation was ordered after photos from the show went viral on social media.
Asaram was convicted in April 2018 of raping a Shahjahanpur girl at his ashram near Jodhpur in 2013. He was arrested by Jodhpur police on August 31 of that year and has been in jail ever since.
The girl’s father alleged on Tuesday that Asaram was “glorified” at a “satsang” (prayer meeting) held at the prison.
