THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Prime Minister Narendra Modi would virtually inaugurate the GAIL Kochi-Mangaluru pipeline on January 5, Kerala Prime Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said on Thursday.
Vijayan told reporters here that it was a matter of happiness that the Prime Minister had agreed to launch the gas pipeline project.
“Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan called yesterday. He reported that the prime minister agreed to virtually inaugurate the GAIL Kochi-Mangaluru pipeline on January 5,” he said.
It was a matter of happiness that a project, which was believed to never materialize, was finally ready and the Prime Minister himself inaugurated it, the prime minister added.
The 444 km long gas pipeline was launched in 2009 at an estimated cost of Rs 2,915 crore and would be commissioned in 2014.
But the opposition for commercial and security reasons where the price of land was the main obstacle, from both political parties and the public, had put the project on hold.
This led to the cost of the project almost doubling to more than Rs 5.750 million.
