Congress Hints at Gupkar Support for DDC Presidents Polls at J&K | India News

NEW DELHI: With Congress in a position to be the author of kings in up to six districts, the party leadership has indicated that it can support the Gupkar alliance in the election of presidents in the District Development Councils in Jammu and Kashmir .
According to the final results, the PAGD, which mainly comprises the national conference and the PDP, has few numbers in Baramulla, Bandipur and Shopian in Kashmir and in Rajouri, Kishtwar, Ramban in the Jammu region. However, with the support of Congress, which has won some constituencies in these districts, the anti-BJP alliance is in a position to win the post of president. Here, Congressional support will drive the combination of the opposition, which includes CPM, against BJP, which relies on independents to gain control of DDCs that would otherwise be out of reach.
Congress contested the DDC elections separately after facing uncomfortable questions about controversial comments from the Gupkar alliance leaders. But party sources said the mandate is against BJP and its policy nullifies J & K’s statehood and reduces it to a mere Union Territory. J&K head of Congress Ghulam Ahmad Mir called it a vote against BJP’s injustice towards J&K.
Congressional sources said the party is likely to link with PAGD where necessary. However, the party did not make an official statement on the matter, and sources said that AICC official Rajani Patil was in talks with local leaders. AICC spokesman Abhishek Singhvi hinted that between the BJP and the PAGD, “Congress cannot support the BJP at any cost.”
The reason Congress separately opposed PAGD was statements made by the head of the PDP, Mehbooba Mufti. With controversy arising over his comments about not wanting to uphold the tricolor as well as his call for the restoration of Article 370, Congress decided to stay away from the grand combination and contested alone. It has done badly in both regions.
While the broad contours of its future lean are known in DDC polls, Congress believes the way forward may be uncertain given slow decision-making on the issue of the election of DDC presidents. An imponderable key is the “reserve” of the top position of DDC. Mir said there were several categories for the reserve, such as SC, SC women, ST, ST women, and the government will decide which chairman’s position will be reserved for which category. “There is concern that the government may reserve the seats in such a way as to benefit the BJP,” he claimed, adding that this should have been done before the elections and not left until the post-results phase.
