Knanaya Catholic Church refuses to comment on the ruling | India News

Knanaya Catholic Church decided to remain silent on the court’s verdict that found two of its members guilty. The official church spokesman said they will not react to the events.
Father Thomas Kottoor was a vicar and taught psychology to Sister Abhaya at BCM College, Kottayam. He was also secretary of the then bishop of the archeparchy. Later he became chancellor of the Catholic diocese in Kottayam. He was also a member of the Kottayam archeparchy surveillance commission. He was removed from office as chancellor of the archdiocese of Kottayam last year when the trial was scheduled to begin.
The move came after the Supreme Court dismissed his request for the charges against him to be dropped. Sources within the church said his leadership was forced to remove him from office, however the official version of the church was that Father Kottoor had requested to be relieved of his duties and added that he had health problems.
Another defendant, Sister Sephy, stayed in the same women’s shelter as Sister Abhaya and was de facto in charge of the hall.
