NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the Muslim University of Aligarh on Tuesday, saying it has worked to strengthen India’s relations with many countries around the world over the past 100 years.
Speaking at the centennial celebrations of the Muslim University of Aligarh (AMU), he said that research conducted at AMU on Urdu, Arabic and Persian languages, research on Islamic literature, gives new energy to India’s cultural relations with the entire Islamic world.

Earlier in the day, PM Modi released a postage stamp as part of AMU’s centennial celebrations. This is the first time that PM Modi has participated in a program at the Muslim University of Aligarh.
AMU became a University in 1920, through an Act of the Indian Legislative Council elevating Mohammedan Anglo East (MAO) College to the status of Central University. MAO College was created in 1877 by Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, according to the PMO statement.
The University has a campus spread over 467.6 hectares of land in the city of Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh. It also has three off-campus centers in Malappuram (Kerala), Murshidabad-Jangipur (West Bengal) and Kishanganj (Bihar).
