DDC Elections: With the Count Still Underway, Both the Gupkar Alliance and the BJP Claim Victory | India News


NEW DELHI: While the votes for the District Development Council (DDC) elections in Jammu and Kashmir are being counted and final results have yet to be announced, both the BJP and the People’s Alliance for the Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) are claiming victory.
Until the latest reports came in, the Gupkar Alliance led with 114 seats, the BJP with 71 and Congress with 24 out of a total of 280 seats, 140 each in the Jammu and Kashmir Valley region.
Votes were cast by ballot in eight phases, from November 28 to December 19.
PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti said the DDC elections made it clear that people have rejected the center’s decision to repeal Article 370.
The leader of the National Conference, Omar Abdullah, said that the people of Jammu and Kashmir have given their full support to the Gupkar Alliance. “The trends and survey results from DDC are a revelation for the BJP,” he added.
On the other hand, the BJP is also proclaimed victorious in the DDC elections.
The BJP of Jammu and Kashmir said that the people of the Union territory have shown faith in Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Union Minority Welfare Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, who had campaigned in the Valley, said: “The BJP’s performance in the DDC elections is a reflection of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment to inclusive empowerment.”
Union State Minister Anurag Thakur said that DDC polls showed that people want to see new leadership take over in Jammu and Kashmir. “Even though people were threatened, they went out to vote in large numbers,” he said.
BJP leader P Muralidhar Rao said that democracy and development are the winners in the DDC elections. “The BJP will be the star actor despite so many obstacles. All credit goes to thousands of BJP karyakartas, ”he said.
Jammu and Kashmir BJP General Secretary Ashok Koul greeted party candidate Aijaz Hussain for being the first candidate of the winning party in Kashmir. “I congratulate Aijaz Hussain on being elected from the Khonmoh-II DDC constituency of Srinagar district. It’s a first for the BJP in Kashmir. I also congratulate the BJP workers and especially the voters for their support, ”he said.
