Government is on alert, no need to panic – Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan on a new strain of coronavirus in the UK
The government is alert and there is no need to panic, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said on Monday after a new strain of coronavirus was detected in the UK. Vardhan made the remarks during the curtain-opening press conference of the 6th India International Science Festival-2020 (IISF 2020).
The UK announced a surprise shutdown on Saturday in London and parts of the country amid a surge in coronavirus disease cases following the discovery of a new strain of the Sars-CoV-2 virus, which causes Covid-19. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced that Christmas shopping and gatherings in southern England should be canceled. According to experts, the new strain could be up to 70% more infectious, prompting its European neighbors and several other countries to ban travelers from entering the country.
Several nations in the European Union and Canada have banned travel from the United Kingdom and others were considering similar actions to prevent the new strain of coronavirus that has been spreading across southern England from spreading to the continent.
France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Ireland and Bulgaria announced restrictions on travel to the UK.
