SC stays in Gujarat HC to send people not wearing masks to serve in Covid centers | India News

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Thursday suspended Gujarat’s high court order to send people caught without masks to perform community service at Covid-19 patient care facilities.
A bench of judges Ashok Bhushan, R Subhash Reddy and MR Shah took note of the Gujarat government submissions that the order was harsh and had serious repercussions on the health of offenders.
The higher court also expressed its disgust that Covid-19 guidelines are not scrupulously followed in the state.
The high court ordered the additional chief secretary of state (home) to ensure that the guidelines issued by the Center and the Gujarati authorities on the wearing of masks and social distancing are strictly followed.
It also called on law enforcement officials and other state administrative authorities to ensure that the guidelines are scrupulously followed and action is taken against those who violate them.
The superior court was hearing the state government’s appeal against the superior court order on Wednesday.
