PCI asks the Center to treat journalists who died due to the coronavirus as ‘Covid warriors’ | India News


NEW DELHI: The Press Council of India has urged the Center to include journalists who died due to Covid-19 in the category of ‘Covid warriors’ as doctors and other essential healthcare personnel, and provide them with the same benefits.
In a letter to the Center and to all state governments, as well as to the union territories, the Press Council of India (PCI) also called for a group insurance plan for journalists to be framed and implemented in line with plans already made by the Haryana government.
In a unanimous resolution of the PCI it said, “The council resolves to recommend to all state governments, union territories and central government that they frame and implement a group insurance scheme for journalists in the pattern of the policy framed by the Government of Haryana. ”
“The council also recommends the central government to include journalists, who died due to Covid-19, in the category of Covid warriors like doctors and others and confer the same benefits on them,” he said.
In accordance with the resolution, the PCI has sent letters to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and to all the chief secretaries of the states and territories of the union.
