Couple sworn in as Madras HC judges | India News


CHENNAI: A married couple, Judge Murali Shankar Kuppuraju and Judge Thamilselvi T Valayapalayam, were sworn in as Madras High Court judges on Thursday. It is only the second case in the history of the Indian judiciary of husband and wife being sworn in together.
The first such couple were Judges Vivek Puri and Archana Puri, who were sworn in as Punjab & Haryana HC judges last year.
In yet another feat, the Madras HC became the first high court with more judges (13) when four more joined the court on Thursday.
In addition to the couple, eight others, G Chandrasekharan, AA Nakkiran, Sivagnanam Veerasamy, Ilangovan Ganesan, Ananthi Subramanian, Kannammal Shanmuga Sundaram, Sathikumar Sukumara Kurup and Manjula Ramaraju, were sworn in.
Of the new appointees, Judges Murali Shankar and Thamilselvi are the youngest and would serve on the high court for 10 years if they were appointed permanent judges after two years.
All 10 judges have been elevated from the subordinate judiciary of Tamil Nadu.
With the appointments, the number of judges in office in the court has increased from 53 to 63, compared to 75 sanctioned.
