Char Dham Highway Project Vital To National Security, Government Tells SC | India News

NEW DELHI: The Defense Ministry told the Supreme Court on Wednesday that halting the Char Dham Highway widening project would impede the rapid movement of men, machines, tanks and heavy weaponry towards the hot India-China border and would have a serious impact on the country’s security.
“These roads must be developed and the poor curves must be improved in such a way as to allow rapid movement towards the border points and ensure that the armed forces / troops are not hit by rapid movements of the enemy. In the event that the national feeding roads are not developed with the required standards, they will become bottlenecks and will delay the deployment of troops and machines in case of emergency mobilization, ”he said. The ministry said the entire border with China was sensitive. A bench of judges RF Nariman, Navin Sinha and KM Joseph also took into account the new affidavit submitted by the highway ministry and asked the high power committee (HPC) to consider the issue again. He asked the HPC to submit a report within two weeks. While the ministry and the military wanted the road to be a two-way carriageway with a total width of 7 meters, the HPC president had submitted a minority report insisting on the Char Dham road project as a single carriageway with a width 5.5 meters. In its request, the Ministry of Defense requested the urgent resumption of double flight work on three strategic roads: the 281 km Rishikesh-Mana road, the 231 km Rishikesh-Gangotri road and the 162 km long Tanakpur-Pithoragarh road. .
