Sushil Modi Submits a Nomination for the Post of Rajya Sabha Left Vacant Following Paswan’s Death | India News

PATNA: BJP Senior Leader and former Bihar MP CM Sushil Kumar Modi on Wednesday presented the nomination as the NDA candidate for the Rajya Sabha by-seat election in the state.
Modi submitted his nomination papers to Patna Divisional Commissioner Sanjay Kumar Agarwal, who is the counting officer for the Rajya Sabha bypoll.
Bihar CM Nitish Kumar and BJP State President Sanjay Jaisawal were also present at the divisional commissioner’s office when Sushil Modi (SuMo) presented their nomination papers.
Rajya Sabha’s seat was vacated following the death of the founder of the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) and the Union’s minister for consumer affairs, food and public distribution, Ram Vilas Paswan, on 8 October this year.
The election of Sushil Modi, 68, to the Upper House of Parliament is almost certain, as the BJP-led NDA has a clear majority in the state assembly. The NDA has 125 MLAs in the 243-member assembly, while the RJD-led Mahagathbandhan has 110 MLAs.
Voting for the RS seat will take place on December 14 if rival Mahagathbandhan decides to contest the bypoll.
Earlier on Friday, the BJP named Sushil Modi as its candidate for the by-election to the Rajya Sabha seat.
“The BJP central electoral committee has approved only one name, Sushil Kumar Modi, as its candidate for the partial vote of Rajya Sabha in Bihar,” the party’s national secretary general, Arun Singh, said on Friday.
Previously, on November 15, the BJP, in a surprise move, had decided that SuMo, its most prominent leader in Bihar, would not continue as deputy CM for one more term together with CM Nitish Kumar.
Sushil Modi was replaced by the two less prominent leaders of the BJP: Katihar MLA Tarkishore Prasad and Bettiah legislator Renu Devi.
