Ministry of Health calls on states to form expert groups to determine Covid-19 test rates | India News

NEW DELHI: The Union Health Ministry said Tuesday that it had issued written instructions to Union states and territories to form expert groups to study the market and determine Covid-19 testing rates.
In response to a question asked at a press conference, the Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan said that deciding the test fees is not the responsibility of the Center and is a state matter.
“However, the Center does make recommendations to the state and Union Territories from time to time to decide the testing fee in a rational and transparent manner.
“Last week, the Union Ministry of Health wrote to all states to establish a group of experts to study the market and determine test rates. States have adopted different ways of setting rates,” he said.
Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) Director General Balram Bhargava said that with the increase in kit production by local manufacturers, the price of Covid-19 test kits has dropped to 75 rupees. for RT-PCR kits and Rs 37 for RNA kits.
“The price has dropped drastically. India has started to export the kits and the demand is much lower than the supply, so the price has dropped,” Bhargava said.
