Ready to back Paswan’s wife if LJP applies for RS bypoll, says RJD | India News

PATNA: The RJD led by Lalu Prasad said on Saturday it would extend “unconditional support” to LJP if it presented Reena Paswan, widow of former Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan, as its candidate for the only Rajya Sabha seat in Bihar. A by-election for the seat will be held on December 14.
RS’s seat was left vacant due to the death of Ram Vilas Paswan on October 8 of this year. On Friday, the BJP had named former deputy CM Sushil Kumar Modi of Bihar as its candidate for the by-election to the RS seat.
A day after the BJP declared its candidate, opposition RJD also urged LJP chief Chirag Paswan to run his mother as his party’s candidate for the RS seat. “RJD strongly believes that the late Ram Vilas Paswan was a great leader of Bihar. It would have been a fitting tribute to him if the NDA had appointed his wife Reena Paswan as their candidate for the Rajya Sabha post that he vacated upon his death. But BJP opted for Sushil Modi, ”RJD spokesperson and former MLA member Shakti Singh Yadav told TOI on Saturday.
However, LJP has yet to make a decision. An RJD politician said that if the LJP did not decide, the Mahagathbandhan would present a candidate for the RS bypoll. The name of Paswan Sr.’s son-in-law, Anil Sadhu, who runs RJD’s SC / ST cell, is also being considered.
