PM Modi comes to Hyderabad to visit the Bharat Biotech plant | India News


HYDERABAD: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived here on Saturday as part of his three-city tour to assess the development of the Covid-19 vaccine. After landing at Hakimpet Air Force station here, he was greeted by Telangana Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar, the Director General of Police and other officials.
It will head to the Bharat Biotech facility located in Genome Valley, a life sciences cluster about 20 km from the AF base, authorities said.
The Covid-19 vaccine, Covaxin, which is being developed by Bharat Biotech in collaboration with the Indian Council for Medical Research and the National Institute of Virology, is now in phase 3 trials.
The vaccine is being developed and will be manufactured at Bharat Biotech’s BSL-3 (Biological Safety Level 3) facility in the Genome Valley in Hyderabad.
Modi will interact with scientists and top management of the city-based vaccine maker on the status of Covaxin, authorities said.
The prime minister will fly back to the national capital after a layover in Pune, where he will visit the Serum Institute of India (SII), which has partnered with pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford for the vaccine.
Earlier in the morning, Modi visited the Zydus Cadila plant near Ahmedabad.
