JAMMU: Three members of the military, including a junior officer (JCO) and two soldiers, have been killed in the past 24 hours in continued violations of the ceasefire by Pakistan from across the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Cashmere. While the JCO was killed in an unprovoked shooting by Pakistan in the Poonch sector on Thursday, two Jawans were killed after a heavy mortar barrage in the Sunderbani sector in the Rajouri district on Friday.
Around 25 members of the security forces have lost their lives in Pakistan’s ceasefire violations throughout the LoC since January this year and four of them have died in the last week alone. 21 civilians have also died.
Defense spokesman Lt. Col. Devender Anand said in Jammu that Pakistan resorted to unprovoked firing and heavy mortar shelling in the Sunderbani sector on Friday morning in which Uttar Pradesh’s Naik Prem Bahadur Khatri and rifleman Sukhbir Singh from the Tarn Taran district of Punjab were seriously injured. They were taken to the hospital where they died from their injuries.
Pakistan also broke the truce at around 1.30 pm the previous day, in the Poonch sector, where Subedar Swatantra Singh of Uttarakhand was seriously injured. He died during treatment in an army hospital. A Kirni area resident of Poonch district, identified as Mohammad Rashid, was also injured in the shooting, Lt. Col. Anand said.
The Army spokesman said the three were “brave, highly motivated and sincere soldiers. The nation will always be indebted to them for their supreme sacrifice and devotion to duty. ”
Earlier on November 21, a JCO was killed while two women were injured in a bombing raid along the LoC in Rajouri and Poonch districts.
